Former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn are leading the 29th annual Carter Work Project in Haiti this week.

The Habitat for Humanity initiative returned to Leogane Friday for the second year in a row.

A team of nearly 600 volunteers will be building 100 new homes in the area of Santo in Leogane, according to Habitat for Humanity’s Web site.

It is part of a wider Habitat shelter programme aimed at building housing in Leogane. The programme is being funded by donors including the Inter-American Development Bank’s Multilateral Investment Fund.

Last year’s project similarly saw the construction of 100 new homes in Santo.

The team of volunteers will be in Leogane until Dec. 1.

Habitat for Humanity has been working in Haiti for 28 years.
