Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow met Tuesday in Belmopan with OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza.

The two officials focused on recent negotiations between Belize and Guatemala concerning the countries’ decades-long territorial dispute, along with issues in Belize such as crime, security and the rights of indigenous peoples.

Insulza also met with Belize Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, National Security Minister John Saldivar and Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca on his visit to the country.

On Monday, Insulza was in Guatemala City, where he took part in the meeting of the “Group of Friends of the General Secretariat for Belize-Guatemala.” Both countries’ foreign ministers attended the meeting.

Belize and Guatemala have already agreed on a date for simultaneous referenda on the issue of Guatemala’s territorial claim to the International Court of Justice.
