The West Indies defeated Sri Lanka in the final of the World Twenty20 tournament in Colombo, taking the crown as world champions on Sunday.

The Windies’ strong tournament, and its 36-run victory Sunday, reminded some of the squad’s global dominance during the 1970s, and could signal a new era for Caribbean cricket.

The West Indies scored 137 for six off 20 overs, led by Marlon Samuels with 78, with Darren Sammy at 26 not out at Premadasa Stadium.

Sri Lanka scored 101 off 18.4 overs, led by Mahela Jayawardene and Nuwan Kulasekara at 26.

Samuels, whose star continues to rise, was named Man of the Match.
