The landmark Miami Tower office building will mark the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence by illuminating in black, green and gold on Monday.

The tower, which was built in 1987, rose to prominence through its appearance in the opening credits of the hit series “Miami Vice.”

Jamaica’s Consul General in Miami, Sandra Grant Griffiths, invited Jamaicans and friends of the Jamaican diaspora community in Florida to “delight in the cultural cornucopia we contribute to the great American landscape, and to recognize the sterling contributions made by those of Jamaican heritage in diverse fields, especially over the past half century.”

There are more than 400,000 Jamaicans residing in Florida, with the largest concentration in the tri-county area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Miami Tower was designed by world-renowned Chinese architect IM Pei.

It is the sixth consecutive year in which the tower has honoured Jamaica’s independence in this fashion.
