New United States Ambassador to Haiti Pamela White arrived in Haiti Wednesday to begin her tour of duty in the country.

White, who was officially sworn in as the US’ new envoy to Haiti July 18, had previously served as America’s Ambassador to The Gambia from 2010 to 2012.

During her prior service in Africa, she had also served as the Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development in Liberia, managing a budget of more than $200 million per year.

She is one of the only foreigners to receive The Gambia’s Medal of Honour.

She had previously served in Haiti from 1985 to 1990 with USAID. White was first appointed as Ambassador to Haiti by US President Barack Obama in January.

She succeeds Ambassador Kenneth Merten, who is now the United States Ambassador to Croatia.

Merten was awarded with Haiti’s National Order of Honour and Merit by President Michel Martelly upon his departure.
