The Extension Division of Grenada’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is planning to host a Root Crop Festival.
The festival, which will take place under the theme “Returning to Our Roots,” was reportedly inspired by a drive to remind the country’s younger generations of the role root crops have played in Grenada’s traditions.
Six roots and tubers will be featured: yam, sweet potato, dasheen, tannia, eddoes and cassava.
The festival will culminate on June 1 with a public root crop exhibition at the Carenage Pedestrian Plaza.
In the weeks leading up to the exhibition, the Ministry of Agriculture will begin a public awareness drive, ultimately looking for Grenadians to begin using more root crops.
The Carenage exhibition will feature displays of a number of varieties of the six crops, information on their cultivation and beverages that can be made with them.
The festival is a partnership with the Grenada Food and Nutritional Council, the Marketing and National Importing Board and private citizens.
