Thailand’s Ambassador to Grenada Udomphol Ninnad visited Grenadian Prime Minister Tillman Thomas this week at his office in Botanical Gardens.

The two sides both expressed the need for further strengthening of bilateral relations within the scope of South-South cooperation, particularly in the area of aquaculture.

Thomas said he was committed to seeking an increase in training opportunities from Bangkok for Grenadians.

Thailand is reportedly showing interest in Grenada’s fishing industry.

“The area of fish and fishing are important to us,” Thomas said following the meeting. “Our government’s focus is adding value to our raw material and we have the potential to increase our export of fish products. With the necessary investment and assistance, we can see greater returns to our fishermen and entrepreneurs.”

Thomas and Ninnad also broached the possibility of organizing a trade and investment mission from Thailand to Grenada, along with the potential for Grenadian businessmen to visit Thailand.

Ninnad also requested Grenada’s support for Thailand’s re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2015, along with its bid for election to the Security Council beginning in 2017.

Thailand is the latest Asian country to show interest in the Caribbean.

Most recently, Singapore expressed a desire to enhance its relationship with the region.
