St Lucian MP Dr Keith Mondesir has announced plans for tourism development in the island’s fishing village of Canaries, with the intent to attract the kinds of tourist dollars that typically filter through to larger cities like Soufriere.

“We believe that tourism is one of the ways to go,” he said. “We are at the doorstep to the mecca of tourism, which is Soufriere. We have said that tourists will not come anywhere if they don’t have something to see.”

The plan for the village involves a refurbishment of the village square, and a focus on art, beginning with the renovation of a 100-year-old church into an art gallery.

Nearby Anse-La-Verdue is where the closest descendants of Carib indians in St Lucia reside, according to Mondesir.
