Guyana and Mexico today signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at establishing a consultative mechanism to focus on all aspects of relations between the countries.

While Guyana and Mexico have had diplomatic ties since 1973, it was not until 2009 that Mexico established an embassy in the country.

In the same year, Mexico began issuing unilateral long-term visas for up to 10 years for Guyanese nationals for the purpose of tourism and business.

“What this MOU will do is ensure that there is a permanent mechanism for dialogue on all of the areas of mutual interest, both issues of a bilateral nature as well as a global nature and these consultations will be held at the ministerial level and, if necessary, at the senior officials’ levels as well,” said Guyanese Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

The two countries plan on caring out high-level consultations periodically.

“Among its many objectives, the main goal of the MOU is to institutionalise a constructive permanent dialogue between Mexico and Guyana,” said Mexican Ambassador Fernando Sandoval.
