The Bahamas is in the midst of a massive infrastructure project that is reshaping nearly the entire road system of the main island of New Providence.

The New Providence Road Improvement and Infrastructure Project, which encompasses 19 major corridors and intersections in New Providence, is set for completion in the first quarter of 2012.

“The roads are designed of high standards and provide a 20-year life span,” said Shenique Albury, environmental specialist for the project.

The scope of the project led a number of business owners who claimed their sales had been affected by the construction to sue the government for compensation. At the end of last week, the Bahamas Court of Appeal overturned a Supreme Court decision granting compensation to the owners.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Sen. Jon Delaney said that the project was a “major infrastructural upgrade and expansion in the island of New Providence that includes water, electricity as well as roads and other related public infrastructure.”
