Martelly Embarks on U.S. Trip

Haitian President-Elect Michel Martelly is heading to the United States for talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and World Bank and IMF officials. According to a statement, Martelly will be discussing “job creation, education, security, reconstruction and health.” Martelly’s election was confirmed in preliminary results earlier this month, and now he sets off on the challenge of rebuilding the tragedy-shaken country.

Preliminary vote counts from the Haitian presidential election show that former singer Michel Martelly won 68 percent of the vote in first counting. Martelly, who was supported by singer and ersatz candidate Wyclef Jean, was facing former First Lady of Haiti Mirlande Manigat.
