Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were lightly shaken by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake, which occurred 61 miles northeast of Higuey in the Dominican Republic and 72 miles northwest of Aguadilla, was felt as far west as Santo Domingo.

But the vast majority of reports of shaking came from Puerto Rico, particularly the city of Ponce.

The strongest levels of shaking were recorded in the northwest of the island.

A spokesman for the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Agency told Caribbean Journal the agency had received no reports of damage or injuries.

There were not yet reports of damage or injuries in the Dominican Republic.
