The government Turks and Caicos is planning to convene a Commission for Independence mandated to define the process required to achieve independence, Governor Ric Todd announced at his Throne Speech Wednesday.

“My government holds as one of its greatest charges, the responsibility of readying our islands and our people for the move toward independence,” Todd said in his speech, which opened the House of Assembly.

The commission will outline specific developmental targets.

Any decision on independence would be through a referendum, he said.

“The achievement of these objectives will enable this eventual transition when called for by our people through a free and fair referendum on the question,” he said.
