It’s a legendary stretch of sand.

Frenchman’s Cove Frenchman’s Cove is almost the opposite of Seven Mile Beach. It is small, green and enclosed, with a freshwater river running directly through the property and into the Caribbean.

That meeting of cool river water and warmer sea water is the signature, and we’ve always thought the beach deserves its reputation as one of Jamaica’s most distinctive places to swim. The sand sits between densely vegetated hillsides, giving the cove an intimacy that is hard to reproduce on a large resort strand.

Portland itself is a big part of the reason to come. Frenchman’s Cove can be combined with the Blue Lagoon, Boston and Winnifred on the same trip, turning this eastern corner of Jamaica into one of the Caribbean’s great beach-hopping destinations.
