Winair and Montserrat Are Looking at Ways to Strengthen the Island’s Caribbean Air Connections

Regional carrier Winair is looking at ways to strengthen air connectivity to Montserrat, following high-level talks between the airline and the island’s government.

Winair officials recently met with Montserrat Premier Reuben T. Meade and Permanent Secretary Camille Thomas-Gerald for discussions centered on the carrier’s service to the island, its links with St. Maarten and opportunities for closer cooperation.

The talks come as Montserrat continues to focus on airlift as a critical component of its tourism and economic development strategy, particularly connections that give residents and visitors more options for traveling between the island and major regional hubs.

Winair currently provides an important link between Montserrat and St. Maarten, giving passengers another way to connect onward through Princess Juliana International Airport and the airline’s wider Caribbean network.

The discussions focused on the existing relationship between Winair and Montserrat as well as potential opportunities to encourage more travel between Montserrat, St. Maarten and other destinations in the region.

No new routes or additional frequencies were announced as part of the meeting, but both sides indicated an interest in continuing talks over Montserrat’s air connectivity.

The issue is particularly important for one of the Caribbean’s smallest destinations, where regional flights play a significant role not just in bringing vacationers to the island but in connecting Montserrat with its diaspora, business markets and onward international flights.

St. Maarten is especially significant because Princess Juliana International Airport offers connections from major cities in the United States, Canada and Europe along with an extensive network of intra-Caribbean service.

Winair, which is based in St. Maarten, has increasingly positioned itself as one of the region’s key inter-island carriers, serving destinations across the northeastern Caribbean and beyond.

The Montserrat talks also come as the airline celebrates its 65th anniversary. Winair invited Meade and the Montserrat delegation to participate in anniversary celebrations alongside government officials and other stakeholders from across its network.

The airline said the invitation reflected the longstanding relationship between Winair and Montserrat, part of a broader group of partnerships that have helped sustain regional aviation links among smaller Caribbean islands.

Montserrat and Winair officials said they planned to maintain an ongoing dialogue over ways to improve the island’s connectivity and support its tourism and broader economy.

While the latest discussions stopped short of unveiling additional flights, they point to the possibility of a deeper aviation partnership at a time when Montserrat is working to make regional travel easier and bring more visitors to the island.

Winair said it remained committed to working with the Montserrat government and other stakeholders on safe, reliable regional air service as the carrier enters its 66th year of Caribbean operations.

Winair is currently flying nonstop between St. Maarten and Montserrat several times each week, with the roughly one-hour service linking Princess Juliana International Airport with John A. Osborne Airport. The August schedule includes flights on multiple days each week, with departures from St. Maarten generally in the morning and return flights from Montserrat later the same day.

The route is operated with Winair’s Twin Otter aircraft and gives Montserrat travelers connections through St. Maarten to destinations across the Caribbean as well as major international gateways.
