Norwegian Is Expanding Bermuda Cruises From New York, Boston and Philadelphia in 2028

A ferry cuts across Hamilton Harbour. Scooters line the curb in the capital. Farther west, the old stone buildings of the Royal Naval Dockyard fill with cruise passengers heading for ferries, buses, shops and beaches across Bermuda.

In 2028, Norwegian Cruise Line is giving more Northeast travelers a direct way to reach the island by sea, with Bermuda cruises from New York City, Boston and Philadelphia and a new ship joining the Philadelphia program.

The biggest change comes in Philadelphia, where Norwegian Gem will make its regional debut in April 2028, beginning a season of seven-day Bermuda voyages from the city.

The ship will join Norwegian Luna from New York and Norwegian Breakaway from Boston, creating three separate Northeast departure points for Bermuda cruises during the season.

The Philadelphia program continues a cruise comeback that began in 2026, when Norwegian Cruise Line restored regular cruising from the city after a 15-year absence.

A New Ship Is Coming to Philadelphia

Norwegian Gem will become the latest ship assigned to Philadelphia when it arrives in April 2028.

The vessel will operate seven-day Bermuda cruises featuring overnight calls at the Royal Naval Dockyard, along with visits to Norfolk, Virginia.

The overnight portion is central to the itinerary. Instead of treating Bermuda as a daytime port call, the ship remains alongside the Dockyard after most day visitors have returned to their vessels.

You can take the ferry across the Great Sound, spend time in Hamilton, head toward the South Shore beaches or explore the western end of the island before returning to the ship later in the day.

A second day gives you another chance to head farther across Bermuda rather than trying to fit the island into a few hours.

Norwegian Gem carries about 2,400 passengers and is one of the smaller ships in Norwegian’s current fleet. The vessel includes a main pool deck, the adults-only Spice H2O area, the Mandara Spa and a mix of restaurants and bars.

Its arrival continues a series of ship changes in Philadelphia.

Norwegian Jewel began sailing from the city in 2026. Norwegian Pearl follows with Philadelphia departures through April 2028, including Bermuda, Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries. Norwegian Gem then takes over the Bermuda program.

Philadelphia Has Become a Bermuda Cruise Gateway

The 2028 season will mark Norwegian’s fifth consecutive season sailing from Philadelphia, extending an operation that has brought regular oceangoing cruises back to the Delaware River.

Philadelphia gives the line a homeport within driving distance of a large part of the Mid-Atlantic, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and sections of Maryland.

The Bermuda itinerary adds Norfolk to the week-long trip, giving passengers a mainland port call in addition to their time on the island.

Norwegian’s Philadelphia cruises depart from the city’s SouthPort Marine Terminal Complex, the same area being used for the line’s current Philadelphia program.

The route has gradually become a regular piece of Norwegian’s Northeast deployment rather than a one-season experiment.

The line first returned with Norwegian Jewel in April 2026, followed by Norwegian Pearl. By 2027, Norwegian was offering Bermuda cruises from Philadelphia from spring through late summer, alongside Canada and New England itineraries later in the year.

The 2028 arrival of Norwegian Gem extends the sequence with another ship and another full Bermuda season.

Norwegian Luna Will Sail to Bermuda From New York

New York will have its own Bermuda program aboard Norwegian Luna, one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ships.

The vessel will operate five- and seven-day cruises from New York City, continuing a Bermuda program that begins with Luna’s New York debut in 2027.

Norwegian Luna entered service in 2026 and carries roughly 3,500 passengers. The ship is part of Norwegian’s Prima Plus class and includes the Aqua Slidecoaster, a hybrid waterslide and roller-coaster-style attraction that winds across the upper decks.

There’s also an outdoor Ocean Boulevard promenade, multiple pool areas, bars and a broad selection of places to eat.

The shorter New York sailings give you another option if you want Bermuda as the main focus of a trip rather than a longer multi-port cruise.

Bermuda has long been one of the defining warm-weather cruise destinations from New York. Ships can reach the island in a relatively short sailing from Manhattan, making itineraries of less than a week possible while still including meaningful time ashore.

Boston Is Getting Another Season With Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian is also returning Norwegian Breakaway to Boston for another season of week-long Bermuda voyages.

The seven-day itineraries will include Bermuda along with calls at Halifax, Nova Scotia, adding a Canadian stop to the itinerary.

Norwegian Breakaway has already become a familiar ship in the Boston market. The vessel began regular Bermuda turnarounds from the city in 2026, when it became the largest Norwegian ship scheduled for recurring departures there.

The ship carries about 3,900 passengers and was refurbished in 2025.

From Boston, the itinerary creates a distinctly North Atlantic cruise: Bermuda’s beaches and historic towns at one end, Halifax’s waterfront, seafood and maritime history at the other.

The itinerary also broadens the choices available to New England travelers who would rather begin their cruise in Boston than head south to New York.

Why the Overnight in Bermuda Changes the Trip

The key feature across Norwegian’s Bermuda program remains its extended time at Royal Naval Dockyard.

Cruise ships dock at Bermuda’s western end, within the historic Dockyard complex. The former British naval base now contains shops, museums, restaurants, ferry connections and attractions, including the National Museum of Bermuda.

From the Dockyard, ferries connect passengers with Hamilton and other parts of the island.

You can also head toward beaches along the South Shore, including Horseshoe Bay Beach, one of Bermuda’s best-known stretches of pink sand.

An overnight makes a significant difference on an island measuring roughly 21 square miles.

You might spend one day along the South Shore and another in Hamilton or St. George’s. You can play golf, visit the Crystal Caves, explore the Dockyard itself or take a ferry across the Great Sound.

There’s less pressure to return to the pier after a single afternoon ashore.

The ship effectively becomes your hotel while Bermuda remains available for another day.

Three Northeast Ports, One Bermuda Season

Norwegian’s 2028 deployment gives Bermuda an unusually broad presence across the Northeast.

New York City gets Norwegian Luna. Boston gets Norwegian Breakaway. Philadelphia gets Norwegian Gem.

Each itinerary takes a slightly different approach.

New York includes both five- and seven-day options. Boston adds Halifax to its seven-day cruises. Philadelphia pairs Bermuda with Norfolk while introducing Norwegian Gem to the city.

The three-port program also reflects Norwegian’s growing emphasis on cruises that begin closer to where large numbers of passengers live.

Instead of flying to Florida before starting a warm-weather cruise, travelers across the Northeast have several choices leaving from regional ports.

Bermuda is particularly well suited to the idea. Its location in the North Atlantic places it within cruise range of New York, Boston and Philadelphia, while its pink-sand beaches, British colonial history, golf courses, pastel houses and compact towns create an island trip very different from the Northeast cities at either end of the voyage.

What You Can Do During a Bermuda Cruise

Royal Naval Dockyard gives you several possibilities immediately after you walk off the ship.

The National Museum of Bermuda occupies the former fortress complex at the Dockyard, with exhibits covering centuries of Bermudian maritime history.

Nearby, you’ll find craft shops, galleries and ferry service across the island.

Horseshoe Bay remains one of the signature beach stops, with pink sand and the rock formations along Bermuda’s South Shore.

Hamilton gives you a different side of the island, with Front Street, shops, bars and restaurants lining the waterfront and streets behind it.

Farther east, St. George’s preserves some of Bermuda’s oldest architecture, narrow lanes and historic buildings.

Bermuda’s relatively small size means a multi-day port stay gives you enough time to see different parts of the island rather than staying near the cruise terminal throughout the visit.

Bermuda Keeps Growing From the Northeast

The 2028 program continues a pattern Norwegian has been developing across several seasons.

Philadelphia returned to the cruise map in 2026. Boston received a larger regular Norwegian presence. New York continues as one of the line’s principal Northeast departure cities.

Bermuda connects all three.

The addition of Norwegian Gem in Philadelphia in April 2028 will add another chapter to the city’s revived cruise program, while Norwegian Luna and Norwegian Breakaway keep Bermuda departures running from New York and Boston.
