Air Canada Is Adding Two New Destinations in Mexico This Winter From Toronto and Vancouver

Canadian travelers will have two more nonstop options for a Mexico escape this winter, including one route into the heart of the Yucatán and another linking British Columbia with one of Mexico’s best-known Pacific beach cities.

Air Canada is adding Mérida and Mazatlán to its winter network, with new seasonal flights from Toronto to Méridaand Vancouver to Mazatlán for the 2026-27 season.

The Toronto-Mérida service begins Nov. 21, operating twice weekly on Mondays and Saturdays through April 17, 2027. Air Canada’s Vancouver-Mazatlán route launches Dec. 15, with flights on Tuesdays and Fridays through April 9, 2027.

The additions give Canadian travelers two very different Mexico vacations — and two more nonstop choices during the coldest months of the year.

If you’re flying from Toronto, Mérida opens up a part of Mexico with a very different character from the country’s major beach resort hubs. The capital of Yucatán is a city of colonial-era houses, shaded plazas, neighborhood cantinas, markets and some of Mexico’s most distinctive regional cooking.

You can walk between Plaza Grande, the Catedral de San Ildefonso and the streets of the historic center, then head north toward Paseo de Montejo, where former mansions line one of the city’s best-known avenues.

Food is one of the main reasons to come. Mérida is the center of Yucatecan cooking, with dishes including cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, relleno negro, panuchos, papadzules and poc chuc. Restaurants range from neighborhood spots serving regional staples to ambitious kitchens drawing heavily on ingredients and techniques from across the Yucatán Peninsula.

The city also gives you an easy base for a trip deeper into the region. Uxmal, one of the great Maya archaeological sites in Mexico, is reachable on a day trip. Cenotes and historic haciendas are scattered across the surrounding countryside, while Progreso puts a Gulf of Mexico beach within roughly 30 minutes of the capital.

Mérida’s hotel scene has grown steadily in recent years, particularly among smaller independent properties in restored houses across the historic center. You’ll also find larger hotels and luxury retreats outside downtown.

The Chablé Yucatán, about 40 minutes from the city, occupies a restored 19th-century hacienda surrounded by tropical gardens and has private casitas, villas and a major wellness program. Closer to the center, properties such as Casa Lecanda, Rosas & Xocolate and the Wayam Mundo Imperial give you options near Mérida’s restaurants, museums and historic districts.

The new nonstop flight gives Toronto-area travelers a direct route into Yucatán beyond Cancun. You’ll land in the state capital itself, placing the restaurants, haciendas, cenotes and Maya sites of western Yucatán much closer to the center of the trip.

The route will operate throughout much of the Canadian winter, beginning just ahead of the late-November travel period and continuing through the middle of April.

Air Canada’s other new Mexico destination has a much more beach-focused profile.

Mazatlán stretches along Mexico’s Pacific coast in Sinaloa, pairing a major beachfront hotel district with a historic downtown, a long Malecón and one of the country’s strongest seafood traditions.

The city has long been popular with western Canadian travelers, and the new Vancouver-Mazatlán nonstop gives British Columbia another direct option for a winter trip to Mexico.

You can spend part of the trip along the beaches of the Zona Dorada, then head into Centro Histórico, where restored buildings surround Plazuela Machado, one of Mazatlán’s central gathering places. Restaurants and cafés occupy the blocks around the plaza, with the Teatro Ángela Peralta nearby.

Mazatlán’s Malecón runs for miles along the Pacific, connecting beachfront neighborhoods, restaurants and stretches of sand. The city also has a substantial local population and an active commercial center, giving a Mazatlán vacation a distinctly urban dimension alongside the resorts.

Seafood is central to the trip. Mazatlán is one of Mexico’s major shrimp ports, and local menus feature aguachile, ceviche, grilled fish and shrimp prepared in seemingly endless variations. Casual seafood stands are as much a part of the experience as restaurants around the historic center.

The Vancouver service launches Dec. 15, placing the first flights right before the Christmas and New Year travel period. Air Canada will operate the route every Tuesday and Friday through April 9, 2027, covering nearly the full winter vacation season from British Columbia.

The new routes broaden Air Canada’s already extensive Mexico program at a time when Canadians have an increasingly wide range of nonstop options across the country.

Major resort destinations such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos remain central to Canadian winter travel, but Mérida and Mazatlán add two trips with a stronger city component.

Mérida gives you restaurants, museums, Maya history and some of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most compelling inland experiences. Mazatlán pairs Pacific beaches with a historic center, a major seafood scene and a long-established vacation culture popular with visitors from western Canada.

The departure cities also make the additions particularly relevant on opposite sides of the country.

From Toronto, the new Mérida flight creates a nonstop link to Yucatán’s capital during the heart of winter. From Vancouver, the Mazatlán service adds another Pacific Mexico option alongside the routes Canadians already use for winter sun.

Both schedules are designed for vacation trips. Twice-weekly service makes a seven-night stay easy to plan, while the November-to-April and December-to-April operating periods cover many of the weeks when Canadian demand for Mexico is highest.

Mérida begins first, with the inaugural Toronto flight on Nov. 21. Mazatlán follows from Vancouver on Dec. 15.

By the middle of December, Air Canada’s Mexico map will have two additional names on it — Mérida from Toronto and Mazatlán from Vancouver — giving Canadians two more nonstop ways to trade winter at home for a week in Mexico.
