The water feels warmer. The beaches have more room. The days seem to stretch across long swims, late lunches, ferry rides, and the kind of unhurried dinners you remember months later.

August in the Caribbean has always had a particular appeal. The winter crowds have disappeared, many hotels have attractive summer rates, and the sea has reached the temperature when stepping in feels almost effortless. Yes, August falls within hurricane season, and travel insurance is always a smart part of the plan. But summer is also one of the most rewarding times to explore the region, particularly when you choose an island with the right hotel, the right beach, and enough personality to fill a week.

We love the Caribbean in the summer because the experience feels more personal. Restaurants have tables. Beaches have space. You can spend an afternoon at a beach bar without planning three days ahead, and you may find yourself returning to the same favorite place night after night.

These are 10 Caribbean islands to visit in August, including tiny islands with only a handful of places to stay, famous beach destinations with new hotels, and diving capitals where the clearest water may be just beyond your room.

Carriacou

There are islands you visit for a resort, islands you visit for restaurants, and islands you visit simply because the scenery is almost impossible to believe. Carriacou belongs in the final category.

The small Grenadian island has some of the most striking water in the southern Caribbean, particularly around Sandy Island, a narrow strip of white sand floating just offshore. The sea moves through shades of turquoise, electric blue, and deep navy, with Grenada’s green hills in the distance and sailboats scattered across the horizon.

Carriacou does not have a large hotel inventory, which is part of its appeal. You may stay in a private villa or rental, find a room at the Mermaid Beach Hotel, or choose one of the island’s small guesthouses. The accommodations are generally simple, locally run, and close to the water.

The island’s rhythms revolve around Hillsborough, the waterfront capital, and Tyrell Bay, the boating center where restaurants and small bars gather near the harbor. A day might include a boat trip to Sandy Island, a swim at Paradise Beach, and grilled fish at a seaside restaurant before the sun drops behind the Grenadines.

Carriacou is not filled with organized attractions or large resorts. Its reward is the island itself: jaw-dropping beaches, clear water, and an intimate vibe increasingly hard to find elsewhere in the Caribbean.
