A New Daily Flight Is Connecting San Juan With St. Thomas in Just 35 Minutes

The curve of Charlotte Amalie Harbour. The hills rising behind the red roofs of downtown. The quick descent toward Cyril E. King Airport, with the Caribbean filling the window almost all the way to the runway.

The trip between Puerto Rico and St. Thomas has always been one of the Caribbean’s most important regional links, carrying vacationers, residents, business passengers and families between two of the region’s busiest island hubs.

Now the journey is getting another daily option — and the flight takes just 35 minutes.

Fly the Whale is launching new daily service between San Juan and St. Thomas on Aug. 3, connecting Isla Grande Airport in Puerto Rico with Cyril E. King Airport in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The new route adds another way to reach St. Thomas, whether you are planning a full vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, continuing onward to St. John or simply adding a few Caribbean days to a stay in Puerto Rico.

The New San Juan-St. Thomas Flight

The schedule is built around a morning departure from San Juan and an afternoon return from St. Thomas.

Fly the Whale will depart Isla Grande Airport at 8:40 a.m., arriving in St. Thomas at 9:15 a.m. The return flight will leave St. Thomas at 3:15 p.m. and arrive in San Juan at 3:50 p.m.

The daily schedule gives travelers several possibilities. You can begin a St. Thomas vacation shortly after breakfast in San Juan, travel between the islands for business or medical appointments, or use Puerto Rico as a gateway to the wider Caribbean.

It also creates a useful pairing for travelers who want to experience two different sides of the region in one trip: the restaurants, architecture and cultural energy of San Juan, followed by the beaches, boating and hillside hotels of St. Thomas.

“Reliable and convenient air service is essential to the continued growth of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ visitor economy,” said RoseAnne DeFreitas, deputy commissioner of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.

“We are pleased to welcome Fly the Whale’s new St. Thomas–San Juan service, which not only creates greater connectivity within the Caribbean but also provides residents and visitors with another convenient option for regional travel.”

A Different San Juan Airport

One of the more interesting elements of the new route is its San Juan gateway.

Fly the Whale will operate from Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, commonly known as Isla Grande Airport, rather than Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Isla Grande is located beside the Puerto Rico Convention Center and the San Juan Bay Marina, a short drive from Condado, Miramar and Old San Juan. Its location can be particularly useful if you are spending a few nights in the city before flying onward to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The airport is also within driving distance of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, giving passengers another potential connection between major mainland flights and regional service.

Travelers arranging an onward journey will need to allow enough time for the ground transfer between the two airports. The airports are separate facilities, and traffic conditions in metropolitan San Juan can affect the drive.

Still, Isla Grande’s central location creates an appealing option if your trip includes a stay in San Juan itself. You can spend a night near the restaurants of Condado, explore the streets of Old San Juan and continue to St. Thomas the next day on a flight lasting little more than half an hour.

What the Flight Opens Up in St. Thomas

St. Thomas remains one of the Caribbean’s most versatile destinations, equally suited to beach vacations, shopping trips, sailing adventures and short island escapes.

After landing at Cyril E. King Airport, you are a quick drive from the restaurants and historic streets of Charlotte Amalie, the beach hotels of Lindbergh Bay and the western side of the island.

Farther east, the resort areas around Red Hook, Nazareth Bay and Cowpet Bay put you near beaches, marinas and the ferry terminal for St. John.

A trip might begin with a few days at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas, set beside Great Bay on the island’s eastern end, or at The Westin Beach Resort and Spa at Frenchman’s Reef, overlooking the Caribbean near Charlotte Amalie.

Other options include Morningstar Buoy Haus Beach Resort, Secret Harbour Beach Resort, Sapphire Beach Resortand the villas and boutique properties spread across the island’s hills.

Then there are the beaches: Magens Bay, with its long arc of calm water; Lindquist Beach, part of Smith Bay Park; Sapphire Beach, known for its views toward St. John and the British Virgin Islands; and Coki Point, a popular stop for snorkeling.

St. Thomas also works particularly well as the beginning of a broader U.S. Virgin Islands itinerary.

An Easy Connection to St. John

From Red Hook, ferries make the short crossing to Cruz Bay, St. John, opening another dimension to the trip.

St. John is home to Virgin Islands National Park, which covers much of the island and includes beaches such as Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay and Hawksnest Bay.

You can stay in Cruz Bay, choose a villa overlooking the water or spend a few nights at The Westin St. John Resort Villas before returning through St. Thomas.

The new Fly the Whale route makes a Puerto Rico-St. John itinerary more practical. You could spend several days in San Juan, fly to St. Thomas, continue by taxi and ferry to Cruz Bay and finish the vacation among St. John’s beaches and hiking trails.

The compact geography is part of the appeal. Two territories, three islands and several very different Caribbean experiences can fit naturally into a single vacation.

Fly the Whale’s Growing Caribbean Network

Fly the Whale began operating inter-island service between St. Croix and St. Thomas in 2023, adding another transportation choice within the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The San Juan route extends the carrier’s reach beyond the territory and strengthens the connection between the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Governor Albert Bryan Jr. said the additional service would benefit both visitors and residents.

“Our Administration has remained focused on strengthening transportation infrastructure and expanding airlift because we know connectivity is critical to our economy and quality of life,” Bryan said.

“This new Fly the Whale service provides greater convenience for residents traveling for business, healthcare or personal reasons while making it easier for visitors to experience everything the U.S. Virgin Islands has to offer.”

Regional flights play an unusually important role in this part of the Caribbean. Puerto Rico serves as a major aviation gateway, while St. Thomas provides onward connections to St. John, the British Virgin Islands and other nearby destinations.

A dependable daily link can help turn trips that once required complicated planning into straightforward two-island vacations.

A New Way to Pair Puerto Rico and the USVI

San Juan and St. Thomas offer an especially strong contrast.

San Juan gives you centuries-old fortifications, a celebrated restaurant scene, beachfront hotels in Condado and Isla Verde and the galleries and plazas of Old San Juan.

St. Thomas brings hillside views, sheltered bays, yacht harbors and the ability to reach another island by ferry before lunch.

The new flight puts the two destinations 35 minutes apart by air, with a schedule designed to give passengers useful hours on both ends of the journey.

The route is also another reminder of how Caribbean travel is changing. Some of the region’s most compelling vacations no longer need to remain within a single island or territory.

Beginning Aug. 3, a morning in San Juan can lead to an afternoon at Magens Bay, dinner overlooking Charlotte Amalie Harbour and a ferry to St. John the following day.
