Carnival Says Celebration Key Has Welcomed 2.4 Million Guests in Its First Year

One year after opening on Grand Bahama, Celebration Key has become one of the most heavily visited cruise destinations in the Caribbean.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Celebration Key welcomed 2.4 million guests during its first year, reaching the milestone on July 19, exactly 12 months after the private destination opened.

The anniversary was marked with a birthday-themed Junkanoo performance, scavenger hunts and a large welcome cake for passengers arriving aboard Carnival Conquest and Carnival Freedom.

The numbers from the inaugural year reveal the size of Carnival Cruise Line’s investment in Grand Bahama — and how quickly Celebration Key has become central to the company’s Caribbean itineraries.

More than 500,000 guests rode the destination’s signature water slides, while the Bahamian-owned Mini Donut King served more than 400,000 sweet treats. Visitors also ordered more than 100,000 piña coladas, according to Carnival.

Hundreds of Junkanoo performances brought one of The Bahamas’ defining cultural traditions directly into the guest experience.

A New Centerpiece for Carnival Cruise Line

Celebration Key was designed as an exclusive destination for Carnival Cruise Line passengers, combining a large beach experience with pools, water attractions, dining, retail and Bahamian cultural programming.

The destination opened on July 19 last year, expanding Carnival’s presence on Grand Bahama and giving its ships a purpose-built port experience developed around the company’s own vacation model.

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy said the first-year results reflect both guest demand and the destination’s relationship with the island.

“We’ve built something special here at Celebration Key,” Duffy said. “Our goal is to create unforgettable memories for our guests, and in its first year, the destination has done exactly that for more than 2 million people.”

Duffy said Carnival plans to continue adding experiences while increasing its involvement with businesses and communities on Grand Bahama.

Celebration Key is now appearing across a broad range of Carnival Cruise Line itineraries, particularly sailings from Florida and other major U.S. homeports. Its proximity to the United States allows ships to include Grand Bahama on shorter cruises as well as longer Caribbean voyages.

The destination has also given Carnival greater control over the full day ashore, from arrival and dining to entertainment and beach activities.

What You Find at Celebration Key

Celebration Key was built to accommodate different types of cruise passengers within one expansive destination.

Families can spend the day around the pools and water attractions, while adults can seek out quieter areas, bars and beach clubs. Dining ranges from casual Bahamian food stalls to larger restaurant concepts, with locally operated businesses playing a prominent role.

The destination’s visual centerpiece is its collection of tall water slides, which drew more than half a million riders during the first year.

Pools and swim-up bars provide an alternative to the beach, while shopping areas feature Bahamian products and Carnival merchandise. Junkanoo performances take place throughout the property, bringing music, costumes and dance into the day.

The experience is designed so passengers can remain within Celebration Key from arrival until departure, although Grand Bahama itself offers additional beaches, restaurants, diving and nature experiences beyond the destination.

A Major Economic Role on Grand Bahama

Carnival says Celebration Key supports approximately 1,000 year-round local jobs, making the destination an important employer on Grand Bahama.

More than 80 percent of the food and retail operators are Bahamian-owned, including Bahama Mama Seafood Pit, Flipping Fritters and Mini Donut King.

The local participation represents a significant part of Carnival Cruise Line’s strategy for the project. Rather than limiting the commercial areas to international concessionaires, the destination gives Bahamian entrepreneurs direct exposure to millions of cruise passengers.

Food is one of the most visible parts of the approach. Bahamian businesses serve seafood, fritters, desserts and local flavors alongside Carnival’s larger dining concepts.

The result gives visitors a clearer connection to Grand Bahama while creating recurring revenue for local companies.

Carnival’s investment also arrives as Grand Bahama continues to expand its tourism economy beyond Freeport’s traditional hotels, casinos and cruise facilities.

Celebration Key has introduced a new stream of daily visitors, many of whom may be experiencing Grand Bahama for the first time.

The First Sensory Inclusive Cruise Destination

Celebration Key also became the world’s first cruise destination to receive Sensory Inclusive Certification through a partnership with KultureCity.

The certification is intended to support travelers with sensory needs, including visitors with autism, dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions that can make crowded or highly stimulating environments difficult.

KultureCity programs typically include staff training, sensory bags, quiet areas and resources designed to help families plan their visit.

The designation gives Carnival Cruise Line another way to broaden the audience for Celebration Key, particularly among families who may need additional support during a cruise vacation.

Cruise destinations can be busy environments, especially during large ship calls. Sensory-inclusive planning can help travelers navigate noise, crowds and unfamiliar surroundings with greater confidence.

A Birthday Celebration With Junkanoo

Passengers arriving aboard Carnival Conquest and Carnival Freedom received a special version of the Celebration Key experience for the anniversary.

A birthday-themed Junkanoo performance greeted guests at the destination, while scavenger hunts and other activities continued throughout the day.

A giant cake display at the entrance marked the anniversary and created a focal point for arriving passengers.

The celebration reflected the two ideas Carnival has emphasized since Celebration Key opened: the company’s own style of entertainment and a distinctly Bahamian sense of place.

Junkanoo has been central to the destination’s cultural programming, giving visitors a direct introduction to the music, elaborate costumes and parade traditions associated with The Bahamas.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Food Donation Program Expands

The anniversary coincided with the expansion of Carnival Corporation’s Less Left Over food-waste program into The Bahamas.

Carnival Freedom and Carnival Conquest completed the first surplus meal donation under the program in the country, redirecting prepared but unserved food to community organizations on Grand Bahama.

The initiative is designed to reduce waste aboard ships while supporting local groups in the destinations Carnival visits.

Cruise ships prepare large volumes of food every day, and surplus meals can be difficult to redistribute because of handling, safety and customs requirements.

Extending the program to The Bahamas creates a new channel for meals that would otherwise go unused.

The Grand Bahama launch connects Carnival Cruise Line’s cruise operations with a community initiative beyond the Celebration Key property itself.

Why Celebration Key Is Important for Carnival

Private islands and exclusive destinations have become increasingly important to major cruise lines.

They give companies the ability to shape the full guest experience while adding beaches, pools, restaurants and attractions designed specifically for cruise passengers.

Celebration Key gives Carnival Cruise Line a large-scale destination close to its most important Florida homeports.

The 2.4 million-passenger total demonstrates how extensively Carnival has already incorporated the destination into its itineraries.

The project also allows Carnival to offer a beach-centered day without requiring passengers to arrange transportation or independent excursions after leaving the ship.

You can walk from the pier into the destination, choose between pools and beaches, eat on property and return to the ship without leaving the Carnival environment.

Celebration Key enters its second year with a large base of repeat Carnival Cruise Line customers who now know the destination and may encounter it again on future itineraries.

Carnival has already indicated that new experiences will continue to be developed as the destination matures.

The first-year statistics provide an early measure of its reach: millions of visitors, hundreds of thousands of slide rides and food purchases, and approximately 1,000 local jobs.
