Cabarete’s Butterfly Effect Is Back, Bringing Wellness, Watersports, and Women’s Leadership to the Dominican Republic

The surfboards are in the water before sunrise. Paddleboards glide across calm Caribbean seas. Yoga mats stretch across the sand. Along the beaches of Cabarete, another edition of one of the Caribbean’s most distinctive wellness gatherings is underway.

The 18th annual Cabarete Butterfly Effect has officially begun, bringing together more than 170 women for five days of wellness, watersports, leadership and community programming under this year’s theme, “Ignite.”

Held in the Dominican Republic’s adventure capital, the event has grown over nearly two decades into one of Cabarete’s signature annual experiences, blending outdoor adventure with personal development and community engagement.

A Week of Wellness

This year’s event opened with registration and a sponsor showcase at Bahia Beach Club, where participants gathered before a week of activities designed to encourage connection, confidence and healthy living.

Wednesday’s Wellness Wednesday – Clinics & Sessions featured a full schedule that reflected the spirit of Cabarete itself.

Participants took part in stand-up paddleboarding clinics, surf sessions, Aqua Fit classes and a biohacking workshop led by Dasha Maximov, founder of Whealth Cabarete, complete with guided ice-bath experiences.

The programming focused on physical wellness, mental resilience and skill-building, themes that have defined the event since its founding.

One of this year’s highlights also reflected the event’s community mission. Girls from the Fundación Cuatro Estrellasparticipated in the ice-bath experience, introducing younger members of the community to wellness practices designed to build confidence and resilience.

More Than a Sports Event

Founded by Michelle Bourdeau, the Cabarete Butterfly Effect has evolved well beyond a watersports festival.

Over the past 18 years, it has become a platform dedicated to supporting women and girls through leadership development, outdoor experiences, mentorship and community programming.

“Every edition demonstrates that when a woman finds confidence and purpose, that change multiplies and transforms an entire community,” Bourdeau said. “That is the true butterfly effect.”

The event continues supporting programs that encourage leadership, personal growth and sustainability while creating opportunities for participants to connect through shared experiences on and off the water.

What’s Ahead

The schedule continues Thursday with a beach cleanup followed by Women in Leadership: Ignite Talk, bringing together women leaders for discussions on leadership, entrepreneurship and personal growth.

On Friday, participants will board a catamaran cruise in Sosúa Bay, adding another of the Dominican Republic’s most picturesque coastal settings to the week’s activities.

The event concludes Saturday with the traditional BE Full Day at Millennium Resort & Spa in Cabarete.

The closing celebration includes yoga sessions, group meditation, a stand-up paddle excursion on the river, along with opportunities to experience kiteboarding, wingfoiling and windsurfing—sports that have helped make Cabarete internationally known as one of the Caribbean’s premier destinations for wind and watersports.

The day wraps up with a closing celebration marking the end of a week centered on wellness, empowerment and community.

Few destinations in the Caribbean are as closely associated with active travel as Cabarete.

Steady trade winds and warm waters have made the north coast town a global destination for kiteboarding and windsurfing, while its beaches also attract surfers, stand-up paddleboarders and beachgoers throughout the year.
