Puerto Rico Tourism Slows, With June Air Traffic Down 4.6 Percent
Puerto Rico’s tourism sector saw a slowdown in June, with passenger traffic through San Juan posting its first notable decline after several years of sustained growth.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport handled 1,197,574 passengers in June 2026, a 4.6 percent decline compared to the 1,254,753 passengers recorded in June 2025, according to the latest traffic data.
The slowdown extended to the first half of the year. Through the end of June, the airport welcomed 6,984,995 passengers, down 2.8 percent from the 7,189,182 passengers recorded during the same period last year.
The figures mark a change after Puerto Rico spent the last several years setting tourism records, fueled by strong domestic demand, expanded airlift and continued hotel investment.
Even with the softer numbers, San Juan remains the Caribbean’s busiest air gateway, with extensive nonstop service from the mainland United States, Canada, Latin America and Europe.
Puerto Rico continues to benefit from one of the region’s broadest tourism offerings, from the historic streets of Old San Juan and the beaches of Condado and Isla Verde to El Yunque National Forest, Vieques and Culebra.
The latest figures suggest the island is entering a period of more moderate demand after years of exceptional growth. While passenger volumes remain historically strong, both the June and year-to-date declines indicate a cooling from the record-setting pace seen in recent years.
The second half of the year, including the important winter booking season, will provide a clearer picture of whether the June results represent a temporary dip or the beginning of a broader normalization in Puerto Rico’s tourism market.
