Martinique Officially Joins CARICOM, Bringing the French Caribbean Closer to the Region

For decades, Martinique has occupied a unique place in the Caribbean. Geographically, culturally and historically, it has always been part of the region. Politically, as an overseas department of France, it has followed a different path from many of its island neighbors.

Now, another bridge has been built.

Martinique has officially become an Associate Member of CARICOM, a milestone that strengthens the island’s relationship with the wider Caribbean Community and further expands one of the world’s longest-running regional integration organizations.

The move became effective on June 16, 2026, clearing the way for Martinique to participate as an Associate Member at the Fifty-First Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, taking place July 5-8 in Saint Lucia.

The development also increases CARICOM’s Associate Membership to seven jurisdictions.

A New Chapter for Martinique

The process began in February 2025, when an agreement granting Martinique Associate Membership was signed.

In June, CARICOM received the Instrument of Accession from the Government of the French Republic, allowing the Agreement on the Privileges and Immunities of CARICOM to enter into force and completing the legal steps needed for Martinique’s admission.

With the agreement now in effect, Martinique officially joins the regional organization as its newest Associate Member, marking another step in the island’s growing engagement with its Caribbean neighbors.

The timing is significant, with regional leaders gathering this week in Saint Lucia for the latest meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, where Martinique is taking part in its new capacity.

What Associate Membership Means

Associate Membership allows non-sovereign Caribbean territories to participate more fully in the work of CARICOMwhile recognizing their constitutional relationships with metropolitan countries.

The status creates additional opportunities for cooperation across many of the issues shaping the modern Caribbean, including economic integration, foreign policy coordination, human and social development and security cooperation.

While Associate Members do not hold the same status as CARICOM’s independent Member States, their participation helps broaden regional dialogue and strengthen collaboration across the Caribbean basin.

For Martinique, the move creates another avenue for working alongside neighboring destinations on issues that increasingly extend beyond national borders.

A More Connected Caribbean

The addition of Martinique reflects a broader trend toward deeper regional cooperation among destinations across the English-, French-, Dutch- and Spanish-speaking Caribbean.

Tourism, transportation, climate resilience, trade and cultural exchange increasingly depend on collaboration across linguistic and political boundaries, making organizations like CARICOM an important forum for regional dialogue.

Martinique’s new role reinforces the idea that many of the Caribbean’s opportunities—and many of its shared challenges—are regional in nature.

It also strengthens the French Caribbean’s institutional ties with neighboring islands across the wider community.

One of the Region’s Most Important Institutions

Established on July 4, 1973, through the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, CARICOM has spent more than five decades promoting closer cooperation among Caribbean nations.

The treaty was revised in 2001 to provide for the creation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, expanding the organization’s economic integration agenda.

Today, CARICOM comprises 15 Member States and seven Associate Members, representing a community of approximately 16 million people, with about 60 percent of the population under the age of 30.

The organization continues to focus on building a Caribbean that is more integrated, resilient and competitive while promoting economic development, social progress and regional cooperation.

Looking Ahead

Martinique’s accession does not immediately change how most people experience the island, but it represents an important milestone in the continuing evolution of Caribbean regional cooperation.

As governments across the region work more closely together on tourism, transportation, trade, resilience and economic development, stronger institutional relationships have taken on increasing importance.

With Martinique now officially an Associate Member of CARICOM, the French Caribbean island begins a new phase in its relationship with the wider region—one that starts this week as leaders gather in Saint Lucia for the organization’s latest summit.
