Antigua, Guatemala.

The cobblestone streets of Antigua. Volcano views rising behind centuries-old churches. Boutique hotels tucked inside former colonial mansions. A food scene that keeps getting better every year.

That’s the Guatemala travelers discover once they arrive.

And now Avianca is making it easier to get there from the West Coast.

The airline has launched new nonstop service between San Francisco and Guatemala City, adding another direct link between California and one of the most compelling destinations in Central America.

The seasonal route began this week and will operate through Aug. 31, 2026, with four weekly flights aboard Airbus A320 aircraft.

A New Nonstop Option From California

The new route gives Bay Area travelers direct access to Guatemala’s capital, eliminating the need for connections on one of the region’s most important travel corridors.

Avianca says the service will operate four times weekly, offering more than 1,400 seats each week between the two cities.

The launch is part of the airline’s broader expansion in the United States, where Avianca now operates more than 400 weekly flights to 14 destinations.

Why Guatemala Is Having a Moment

Avianca has positioned the route as part of growing travel demand tied to major international events, including the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.

But Guatemala’s appeal goes far beyond sports.

Just an hour from Guatemala City, Antigua Guatemala remains one of the most rewarding destinations in the hemisphere. The UNESCO World Heritage city combines colorful colonial architecture, rooftop restaurants, historic churches, coffee shops, boutique hotels, and dramatic volcano backdrops that have made it a favorite among travelers looking for culture and character.

Beyond Antigua, visitors can head to Lake Atitlán, surrounded by volcanoes and small towns along the shoreline. The country’s northern region is home to Tikal, one of the most impressive ancient Maya cities in the Americas, where towering temples rise above the rainforest canopy.

Coffee farms, hiking trails, local markets, and a growing collection of design-forward hotels have helped Guatemala build a reputation as one of the region’s most interesting destinations.

A Growing U.S. Presence

The San Francisco route is the latest addition to Avianca’s expanding U.S. network.

The carrier transported more than 4.9 million passengers to and from the United States last year and has continued investing in its North American operation. The airline has also completed the rollout of its Business Class Americas product across eligible routes connecting the United States with destinations throughout Central and South America.

For travelers in Northern California, the new service opens another nonstop gateway to a destination that offers a very different kind of getaway than a traditional beach vacation.

You can spend a morning walking Antigua’s stone streets, an afternoon overlooking Lake Atitlán, or a day exploring ancient Maya ruins deep in the Petén region.

And now getting there from San Francisco just got a lot easier.
