Norwegian Cruise Line Just Revealed the Opening Date for Its New Bahamas Waterpark, With a 170-Foot Tower, 19 Slides and a Lazy River

Norwegian Cruise Line has finally set a date for one of the most highly anticipated debuts in Caribbean cruise travel: the grand opening of the Great Tides Waterpark at Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas.

The sprawling new waterpark will officially open on Sept. 4, with the inaugural day taking place during Norwegian Luna’s seven-day Caribbean sailing from Miami, Caribbean Journal has learned.

It’s a major moment for the Bahamas cruise scene — and for Great Stirrup Cay, which has been undergoing one of the most extensive private island transformations in the cruise industry.

Beginning this week, guests booked on sailings to Great Stirrup Cay on or after Sept. 4, 2026 can purchase day passes to the Great Tides Waterpark in advance, allowing travelers to lock in their spot before they even board the ship.

For those who want to elevate the experience, Norwegian is also offering private cabanas accommodating up to six guests. The cabanas include waterpark admission and are positioned just steps from the park’s centerpiece — the towering Tidal Tower — offering shaded comfort between trips down the slides.

A Six-Acre Waterpark in the Bahamas

Spanning nearly six acres, Great Tides Waterpark is designed to be a destination unto itself, with 19 slides and a roster of attractions aimed at every kind of traveler — from thrill-seekers to families with small children.

At the heart of the park is the 170-foot Tidal Tower, an imposing structure that will house some of the waterpark’s most ambitious rides. Chief among them are the Breakwater Blasters, billed by Norwegian as industry-first water coasters that combine downhill drops with uphill blasts, all experienced from inside an inner tube.

The Tidal Tower will also feature the Whitewater Dash, a pair of body slides; the Rapid Mat Racers, with two mat slides for side-by-side racing; and a selection of tube slides including Tropic Storm and Tropic Spiral, designed for spirals, spins and what Norwegian is calling “an adrenaline rush.”

That’s just the start.

Great Tides Waterpark will also include Cliffside Cove, which Norwegian says will feature the industry’s first and highest cliff jumps. Then there’s The Great Slide, billed as the Caribbean’s only four-person body slide — a ride engineered for groups of friends or families to descend together.

Add in the Fearless Falls racing slides, and the lineup gives Great Stirrup Cay one of the most ambitious waterpark concepts of any private island destination in the region.

There’s also a clever twist: the Grotto Bar, a hidden lounge tucked beneath the action, offering prime viewing of the slides above while guests sip cocktails below.

Something for Every Traveler

While the slides are clearly the headliners, Norwegian has built Great Tides with a wider audience in mind.

For younger guests, the park will include Splash Cay, a 9,000-square-foot kids’ zone designed for splashing, climbing and getting wet without the high-octane element of the bigger slides.

And for those looking for something more laid-back, there’s the Wandering River — an 800-foot lazy river with a twist. Norwegian is positioning it as a higher-energy take on the classic concept, blending relaxation with bursts of movement.

Three all-new food trucks will be spread throughout the park, serving a dynamic lineup of dining options for guests grabbing a bite between slides.

“Great Stirrup Cay continues to evolve as the premier private island destination in the Bahamas, and we’re excited to officially open Great Tides Waterpark on Sept. 4, 2026,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, in a statement.

“With the best activities for families and for every type of traveler — from high-energy slides to laid-back lagoon experiences — guests can purchase their day passes ahead and lock in an unforgettable day on the most spectacular private island in the Caribbean beginning tomorrow.”

A Transformed Private Island

The waterpark is the latest — and most dramatic — addition to a sweeping reinvention of Great Stirrup Cay, which has steadily been expanding its footprint of activities and amenities.

Among the most notable recent additions is the Great Life Lagoon, an expansive pool area featuring a beach-style entry, swim-up bars and broad spaces to lounge with views of the ocean. It’s quickly become one of the island’s signature gathering spots.

There’s also the adults-only Vibe Shore Club, an exclusive retreat for guests looking to escape the family-focused areas of the island. For families, the new Splash Harbor offers another water-focused option suited to younger travelers.

And to help guests navigate the now-expansive island, Norwegian has also rolled out a new tram system, making it easier to move between the beaches, lagoons, dining venues and — soon — the waterpark itself.

It all amounts to one of the most significant private island transformations in the Caribbean cruise space, with Great Stirrup Cay positioning itself alongside the region’s other major cruise-line private destinations.

How to Visit Great Stirrup Cay

Great Stirrup Cay is open year-round, with voyages sailing seasonally from a range of convenient homeports.

Cruisers can sail to the island from New York and Philadelphia, as well as from a quartet of Florida ports: Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando (Port Canaveral) and Miami.

For travelers specifically looking to be part of the Great Tides Waterpark grand opening, Norwegian has highlighted one sailing in particular: Norwegian Luna’s seven-day Caribbean voyage from Miami, departing Aug. 29, 2026.

That sailing arrives at Great Stirrup Cay on the waterpark’s debut day of Sept. 4, 2026.

Norwegian Luna — the newest ship in the fleet — will continue operating itineraries through November 2026, calling at Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, in addition to Great Stirrup Cay.

It’s a pairing the cruise line is leaning into: the brand’s newest ship visiting its newest private island experience.
