Puerto Rico has secured a renewed commitment from Royal Caribbean, reinforcing San Juan’s role as one of the Caribbean’s leading cruise homeports.

The Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico confirmed that the Government of Puerto Rico and Royal Caribbean have ratified a strategic agreement that will position the Port of San Juan as a key hub for the cruise line’s homeport operations through the 2027 fiscal year.

The agreement underscores the island’s continued competitiveness in the cruise sector, driven by its port infrastructure, strong air connectivity and ability to handle large-scale cruise operations.

Homeporting Drives Bigger Economic Impact

The renewed partnership centers on homeport operations, meaning cruise passengers begin and end their trips in San Juan — a segment widely seen as more valuable to local economies than traditional transit calls.

Officials say that distinction translates directly into higher spending across hotels, restaurants and local businesses.

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González Colón said the agreement reflects continued confidence from the cruise industry and strengthens the island’s position as a regional hub.

Tens of Millions in Projected Impact

Tourism officials estimate significant economic returns tied to the agreement.

According to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, 71 homeport calls from three Vision-class ships are expected to generate approximately $45 million in economic activity. An additional 20 calls from the Celebrity Constellation are projected to contribute another $13 million.

The projections highlight the continued growth potential of Puerto Rico’s cruise sector, particularly as homeport operations expand.

Infrastructure Upgrades Support Expansion

The agreement follows a series of infrastructure improvements at the Port of San Juan, including upgrades to the Pan American Pier.

Puerto Rico Ports Authority Executive Director Norberto Negrón said those investments have been central to securing long-term cruise commitments and increasing the port’s capacity.

Additional modernization projects are currently in development as officials continue to position San Juan for further growth in cruise traffic.

A Year-Round Presence in Puerto Rico

Royal Caribbean remains the only cruise line operating year-round homeport service in Puerto Rico, reinforcing the island’s importance within the Caribbean cruise network.

That presence is complemented by transit calls from other ships, including the recently announced Hero of the Seas, adding further momentum to the destination’s cruise sector.

Announced at Seatrade Global 2026

The agreement was confirmed during Seatrade Global 2026 in Miami Beach, one of the cruise industry’s leading international events, where Puerto Rico officials were actively promoting the island as a destination for expanded cruise operations and investment.

With the renewed partnership in place, San Juan is expected to remain a central hub for Caribbean cruising, supported by continued infrastructure investment and sustained demand from major cruise operators.
