Cancun Air Traffic Declines in March
Cancun International Airport reported a decline in passenger traffic in March, with decreases across domestic, international and total volumes, according to new data from airport operator ASUR.
Total Passenger Traffic Down 4.6 Percent
The airport handled 2,801,790 total passengers in March, down from 2,936,470 in the same month last year, representing a 4.6 percent decrease. The decline amounts to more than 134,000 fewer travelers year over year, a meaningful shift for one of the Caribbean Basin’s highest-volume airports.
The softer result comes amid a combination of factors, including calendar timing differences for Easter and Semana Santa, which can change peak travel demand between March and April, along with broader normalization after several years of elevated post-pandemic travel volumes.
International Traffic Falls 4.1 Percent
International passenger traffic reached 2,054,234 travelers, compared to 2,142,355 in March of the previous year, a 4.1 percent decline. This segment remains the backbone of Cancun’s traffic, driven largely by routes from the United States and Canada.
The decline reflects a mix of adjusted airline capacity on some routes and more measured demand following a sustained surge in international leisure travel. Perception factors, including ongoing security concerns in parts of Mexico, have also been cited as a potential influence on traveler decision-making, though their direct impact is harder to quantify.
Domestic Traffic Drops 5.9 Percent
Domestic passenger traffic totaled 747,556 travelers, down from 794,115 in March last year, a 5.9 percent decrease, marking the steepest percentage drop among the three segments.
The domestic slowdown points to softer internal travel demand within Mexico during the month, alongside the same calendar-related shifts and broader demand recalibration affecting international traffic.
Taken together, the March figures highlight a broad-based cooling in Cancun’s air traffic, driven by a combination of timing effects, airline adjustments and more moderate demand patterns following a prolonged period of growth.
