A key West Coast route to one of Mexico’s most popular beach destinations is getting a boost this fall.

Southwest Airlines is planning to expand its service between San Diego and Los Cabos, Mexico, increasing the route from once-daily service to twice daily beginning Oct. 1, according to airline schedule filings.

The added frequency is expected to operate on a seasonal basis tied to demand, giving travelers from Southern California more flexibility when planning trips to the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula.

More Options From Southern California

The San Diego–Los Cabos route has become one of the most convenient ways for Southern California travelers to reach the region’s beaches, resorts and golf courses. With the new schedule, Southwest will offer two daily departures between San Diego International Airport and Los Cabos International Airport, making both short getaways and longer stays easier to plan.

Additional frequencies typically help travelers by expanding departure windows throughout the day, something especially useful on a relatively short international route like this one.

Los Cabos has continued to see strong visitor demand from the United States, particularly from the West Coast, where flight times are short and weekend trips are easy to arrange.

A Quick Hop to the Baja Coast

The flight between San Diego and Los Cabos usually takes about two and a half hours, placing travelers within easy reach of the destination’s well-known hotel corridors, beaches and marinas.

Los Cabos is actually two distinct towns connected by a coastal highway: San José del Cabo, home to the destination’s historic district and art scene, and Cabo San Lucas, known for its marina, nightlife and the iconic El Arco rock formation.

The destination has seen a steady pipeline of new resorts and residential resorts in recent years, along with continued investment in golf courses, luxury hotels and high-end dining.

More Lift for a Popular Destination

The additional flights represent a modest but meaningful increase in airlift between Southern California and Baja California Sur, a market that has proven consistently strong for airlines.

For travelers in San Diego and across Southern California, the change means more daily options to reach Los Cabos just in time for the fall and winter travel season, when demand for warm-weather escapes traditionally climbs.

Southwest’s expanded schedule is currently slated to begin Oct. 1, with the airline adjusting the second daily frequency depending on seasonal travel patterns.
