Air traffic through San Juan dipped slightly to start the year, according to newly released figures for January from ASUR, which manages Puerto Rico’s primary air hub.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport handled 1,190,578 passengers in January 2026, down 2.1 percent from the 1,216,168 passengers recorded in January 2025.

Domestic Traffic Drives the Decline

The overall decline was driven by softer domestic travel.

Domestic passenger traffic totaled 1,053,646 in January 2026, compared to 1,081,636 the previous January — a 2.6 percent decrease year-over-year.

Domestic routes account for the vast majority of San Juan’s passenger volume, making shifts in mainland U.S. demand particularly influential on overall performance.

International Traffic Edges Up

International traffic showed modest growth, in line with the recent trend in San Juan. 

San Juan recorded 136,932 international passengers in January 2026, up 1.8 percent from 134,532 in January 2025.

While international travel remains a smaller share of the airport’s total volume compared to domestic routes, the increase suggests incremental strength in markets beyond the U.S. mainland.

The January results reflect a slight cooling in passenger volume following steady post-pandemic growth in recent years, with domestic demand the primary variable shaping San Juan’s early 2026 performance.
