A new transcontinental link is coming to Central America next summer. Avianca has put tickets on sale for a seasonal nonstop service between Guatemala City and San Francisco, adding a rare direct connection between Guatemala and the U.S. West Coast during the peak summer travel window.

The new flight will operate from June 1 through Aug. 31, 2026, giving travelers a straight shot between the Guatemalan capital and Northern California at a time when demand traditionally spikes for both leisure and visiting-friends-and-family travel.

The flight comes as San Francisco is quietly starting to see more airlift to the Caribbean, including the Caribbean coast of Central America, with flights to places like Belize and Panama, too.

How the Route Works

The service is part of Avianca’s San Salvador–Guatemala City–San Francisco routing, with the Guatemala City–San Francisco segment operating seasonally. Flights will be operated on Airbus A320 aircraft configured with 180 seats.

The overnight departure arrives in San Francisco early the same morning, making it a practical option for onward connections or a full first day on arrival. The return flight leaves San Francisco in the morning and arrives back in Guatemala City in the afternoon.

Flight Schedule Details

The Guatemala City to San Francisco flight begins June 1, departing at 1:20 a.m. and arriving at 6:25 a.m., operating on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The return service from San Francisco to Guatemala City departs at 7:45 a.m. and arrives at 2:15 p.m. on the same operating days.

The routing connects through San Salvador, with late-night and afternoon segments linking El Salvador and Guatemala City as part of the same operation. All schedules remain subject to final government approval.

Why This Route Matters

Direct service between Guatemala and the U.S. West Coast has historically been limited, often requiring connections through Texas, Florida, or Mexico. This new flight shortens travel time for passengers heading to California while also opening a more efficient path for West Coast travelers visiting Guatemala during the summer months.

For Avianca, the route strengthens its Central America–United States network by linking three countries through a single operation and adding capacity during the high-demand summer season.
