This Top Dive Resort in Curacao Is Opening a Second Property on the Island

Curaçao’s Scuba Lodge & Ocean Suites, the boutique hotel known for its historic façades — and its diving — in the Pietermaai district of Willemstad, is expanding its footprint on Curaçao with the acquisition of Bahia Apartments & Diving in Lagun. The property will operate under the new name Scuba Lodge Lagun Beach, effective immediately, and will be led by Olvert Sophia and Christina Sieperda.
The expansion marks a significant step for Scuba Lodge, which has operated in Pietermaai for more than 15 years and has built a reputation for personal hospitality and a relaxed, service-driven approach. With the addition of the Lagun property, the brand now encompasses two distinctly different locations on the island: an urban setting within walking distance of the heart of Willemstad, and a nature-focused seaside retreat on Curaçao’s quieter western coast.
Bahia Apartments & Diving was founded 21 years ago by Peter and Thea Koster and has become a well-established name in Lagun, known for its direct seaside location, access to shore diving, and close connection to the surrounding natural environment.
Over the years, the operation grew to include 19 apartments and a team of 34 employees, attracting repeat visitors drawn by its informal atmosphere and setting above one of the island’s most popular coves.
“Bahia has been our heart and pride for many years,” Peter and Thea Koster told Caribbean Journal. “After more than two decades of building Bahia, we have consciously chosen to devote more time to our family and create space for our personal hobbies.” The founders noted that the transition was made with care for the future of the property and its staff.
Under its new ownership, the property will continue operating with a focus on its existing strengths, including its seaside character and relationship with the local community, while aligning with the service standards associated with the Scuba Lodge brand, the company said.
The new name, Scuba Lodge Lagun Beach, reflects both continuity and integration within the broader Scuba Lodge portfolio.
“Scuba Lodge now offers two completely different locations,” Sophia said. “One within walking distance of the heart of Willemstad, and one surrounded by nature.”
For guests, the expansion introduces new booking options that combine stays at both properties. Visitors can now arrange trips that include time in Pietermaai, with its restaurants, nightlife, and historic streets, followed by a stay in Lagun, known for its quiet bays, snorkeling, and access to the island’s western landscapes.
The combined-stay concept is designed to showcase contrasting sides of Curaçao within a single visit.
The expansion is a sign of broader trends in Curaçao’s tourism sector, where established boutique operators are increasingly looking beyond Willemstad to develop experiences tied to nature, community, and smaller-scale accommodations. By linking a city-based boutique hotel with a coastal retreat, Scuba Lodge is positioning itself to appeal to travelers seeking both cultural access and outdoor immersion.
It’s also a sign of the increasing impact of Curacao’s ongoing tourism renaissance.
