Puerto Rico is set to strengthen its position as a major Caribbean cruise hub beginning in the winter 2026–2027 season, with Norwegian Cruise Line announcing that two of its newest ships will begin homeport operations out of San Juan, Caribbean Journal has learned.

According to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the Norwegian Prima will begin sailing from San Juan as a home port on Nov. 15, 2026, while the Norwegian Viva will join operations during the winter 2027–2028 season. Tourism officials estimate the Prima alone will generate more than $23 million in economic impact during fiscal year 2027, with the combined impact of both ships expected to reach nearly $40 million in fiscal 2028.

Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel said the decision underscores growing confidence in the island’s cruise infrastructure and destination appeal. She noted that Norwegian Cruise Line plans to operate 57 Caribbean sailings from San Juan, creating opportunities for increased hotel stays, dining activity, and pre- and post-cruise travel throughout the island.

“The decision to use San Juan as a home port reflects a shared vision regarding Puerto Rico’s relevance, attractiveness, and quality as a tourism destination,” Robles Cancel said. “Beyond the significant economic injection, these operations encourage the development of pre- and post-cruise packages that expand the benefits of tourism across the island’s economy.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Vice President and Managing Director of Sales for Latin America, Brazil, and the Caribbean Frank Medina said Puerto Rico continues to be one of the company’s most popular destinations. He added that the return of the Viva and the introduction of Prima homeport sailings represent a strategic expansion of Norwegian’s regional footprint.

Puerto Rico Ports Authority Executive Director Norberto Negrón said the announcement positions San Juan’s harbor as a simultaneous home port for two of the cruise line’s flagship vessels, reinforcing broader efforts to establish Puerto Rico as a leading cruise hub in the Caribbean.

The scheduled itineraries will include weekly Saturday departures for the Norwegian Prima, with calls in destinations such as Tortola, St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, and St. Thomas. The Norwegian Viva will operate southern Caribbean routes, including stops in Aruba and Curaçao.

Both ships are part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Prima Class, the company’s newest generation of vessels. The ships feature a modern, minimalist design and are built to accommodate up to 3,950 passengers. Onboard amenities include a three-level go-kart track, multiple pools and water attractions, Broadway-style entertainment, DJ-driven nightlife spaces, and a full-service spa focused on wellness and relaxation.
