The Dominican Republic Just Set a New Record for Visitors in a Single Year — 11.6 Million

The Dominican Republic closed December with the strongest tourism performance ever recorded in the country’s history, capping a year defined not by recovery, but by sustained growth in a more difficult global travel environment.

Air arrivals in December climbed more than 10 percent year over year, reaching close to 960,000 visitors in a single month — the highest monthly total the destination has ever achieved. That figure significantly exceeds pre-pandemic highs, when monthly arrivals averaged about 667,000 travelers under far more favorable international conditions.

That’s a very good sign for the broader region.

The December surge helped push total visitation for the year to 11.6 million visitors, marking the best annual tourism result in the history of the Dominican Republic.

Why the Growth Matters

Tourism officials say the performance reflects structural strength rather than a temporary rebound. The year unfolded amid global headwinds, including geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and shifting travel patterns.

Despite a slowdown in the U.S. market and challenges in several traditional source regions, the Dominican Republic accelerated growth in the final quarter of the year, reinforcing its position as the Caribbean’s leading tourism destination.

Airlift, Hotels and Demand in Balance

A central driver of the results has been expanded air connectivity paired with what officials describe as efficient demand management. The destination added approximately 2,500 new hotel rooms during the year while maintaining strong occupancy levels, signaling continued investor confidence and effective absorption of new supply.

The ability to grow room inventory without weakening performance metrics has become a defining feature of the country’s tourism model.

Cruise Tourism Strengthens the Mix

Cruise travel continued to expand as a strategic pillar of the sector — and responsible for much of the growth. The Dominican Republic welcomed 2.8 million cruise passengers over the course of the year.

The arrival of larger ships and expanded international itineraries has highlighted the country’s upgraded port infrastructure and operational capacity, positioning it among the most significant cruise destinations in the Caribbean.
