This Sandals Resort Near Ocho Rios Just Reopened — And Every One of Its 74 Suites Comes With Butler Service

Sandals Royal Plantation.

The first time I visited Sandals Royal Plantation, what stayed with me was how quickly the place became familiar. The arrival was brief. The transition from road to terrace took minutes. Within a short walk, you could see the full outline of the resort, the sweep of the cove below, the handful of shared spaces that would shape the days ahead. It was immediately clear that this was a different expression of the Sandals idea.

Years later, that impression still holds, and the resort is back open again after a post-Melissa pause.

A Boutique Interpretation of Sandals

Royal Plantation sits apart within the Sandals portfolio because of its size and structure. It is couples-only and composed entirely of Butler Suites, with every room facing the sea. There are no internal views, no alternate categories, no hierarchy among accommodations. That uniformity creates a level starting point for every guest and simplifies the experience from the outset.

With fewer rooms, movement stays local. You pass the same guests in the morning and again at dinner. Shared spaces remain easy to navigate. Over a few days, the resort becomes familiar in a way that larger properties rarely do, and that familiarity shapes the tone of the stay.

And if you’ve been to a Sandals, you know how amazing its Guild of Professional English Butlers-trained staff can be.

The Setting Above the Cove

The resort is positioned on a coral bluff overlooking a protected cove where the water stays calm throughout the day. Stone terraces step down toward the sand, and paths through the gardens connect suites, restaurants, and lounges without long walks or crowded corridors. From nearly every vantage point, the sea is visible, whether from a suite balcony, a shaded terrace, or the garden level above the beach.

Mornings often begin slowly, breakfast taken outdoors or delivered to the suite. Afternoons drift naturally between the beach and the shaded seating areas above it. The physical layout supports that flow, keeping everything within easy reach.

Service That Builds Familiarity

Because every guest has Butler service and the number of guests is limited, service at Royal Plantation tends to feel consistent rather than performative. Preferences are noted early. Timing becomes predictable. Requests rarely need to be repeated.

On return visits, that consistency deepens. Staff recognition is common. Conversations resume easily. For couples celebrating anniversaries or returning year after year, this continuity becomes part of the appeal.

Rituals That Shape the Day

One of the defining routines at Royal Plantation is afternoon tea in the garden. Guests gather beneath the trees while peacocks move through the grounds. Tea is poured. Conversation stretches. There is no program attached to it, no sense of urgency. It happens at the same time each day, and people attend because they enjoy the pause.

Evenings follow a similar path. Dinner plans are often decided late. A walk along the terraces follows. A final drink is taken overlooking the water, preferably an Appleton.

Dining, Golf, and Expanded Access

Dining is focused and well paced. Five restaurants offer a range of Caribbean and international dishes, all included, along with top-shelf spirits and in-room minibars stocked with wine and local beer. The Champagne and caviar bar adds a distinctive option that fits naturally into the resort’s refined atmosphere.

Guests also have full Stay at One, Play at Two privileges with the nearby, energy-filled Sandals Ochi. Complimentary transportation runs regularly, opening access to a broader selection of restaurants and entertainment. Many guests take advantage of this during the day and return in the evening, when Royal Plantation feels particularly calm.

Golf is included as well, with green fees at Upton Estate Golf and Country Club covered and transfers handled seamlessly. A morning on the course fits easily into the day without reshaping the rest of the stay.

Why It Endures

What defines Royal Plantation over time is consistency. Staff continuity remains strong. Spaces feel familiar quickly. The experience does not reset each day.

New nonstop flights into Ocho Rios have shortened arrival time, placing the resort just minutes from the airport and reinforcing the ease that defines the stay from the moment you land.

Among Sandals resorts, Royal Plantation occupies a specific niche. It is boutique, suite-only, and intentionally intimate. The experience favors familiarity, proximity, and steady pacing over variety or spectacle. For travelers who prefer a quieter, more contained version of the all-inclusive experience, it remains one of the most distinctive options in Jamaica.
