American Airlines Is Adding Nonstop Flights to a Caribbean Island Famous for Its Blue Water, Waterfront Resorts, and Unmistakable Character

Some islands are defined by scale; Bimini is defined by stories. It’s the closest Bahamian island to the U.S., but it has always carried an outsized place in the Caribbean imagination — a strip of land where writers, activists, fishermen and wanderers have all left their mark. With American Airlines launching the only nonstop flights from the United States beginning Feb. 14, 2026, this small island suddenly feels newly accessible in a way that matches its cultural weight.

A Faster Way To Reach The Bahamas
American’s new service will operate Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from Miami on Embraer 175 aircraft, part of the carrier’s record-setting winter schedule out of South Florida. The flights add a fast, direct link to an island known for character, personality and a geography that rewards exploration.

Hemingway’s Bimini
Bimini’s history is unusually rich for a place just seven miles long. Ernest Hemingway spent long stretches of the 1930s here, drawn by the fishing, the rum shops and the frontier feeling of the island. His time in Bimini inspired scenes in Islands in the Stream and brought global attention to the waters that were already legendary among anglers. That maritime identity remains a defining piece of the island’s appeal.

A Retreat For Dr. King
It was also in Bimini that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. found a quiet retreat in the 1960s. Local residents recall him walking the beaches, working on speeches and conversations that shaped some of his most important public writing. A bust and memorial stand today as reminders of his time on the island — a connection that continues to give Bimini a sense of historic and moral gravity far beyond its size.

A Bonefishing Capital
For many travelers, fishing is still the gateway to understanding the island. Bimini is one of the world’s great bonefishing destinations, with broad, pale flats and guides who know every shift in the tide. Anglers come for the challenge of stalking bonefish in clear, shallow water; even visitors who are new to the sport find it surprisingly accessible here, where the natural environment does most of the teaching.

Where To Stay
New lift also brings new energy to Bimini’s hotel scene. Bimini Big Game Club remains the island’s classic harborfront stay — a place with fishing culture in its DNA, a marina at its doorstep and a sense of authenticity that has made it a favorite for decades. Just to the north, Resorts World Bimini offers a completely different experience, anchored by its lagoon-style pools and the popular swim-up rooms that blend resort comfort with instant access to the island’s signature blue water.

A New Chapter For Bimini
As American begins nonstop service this winter, Bimini enters a new chapter — one where its history, culture and unmatched proximity align with easier access, inviting more travelers to rediscover a place that has shaped some of the Caribbean’s most enduring stories.
