In the British Virgin Islands, Finding Christmas in July

By: Karen Udler - July 5, 2025 - 4:14 pm

In the British Virgin Islands, the holiday spirit isn’t limited to December. Every summer, the BVI brings a burst of yuletide joy to the Caribbean heat with its annual “Christmas in July” celebration—a one-of-a-kind event that blends festive cheer, music, and boats in one of the most beautiful anchorages in the region.

The main event unfolds at Pond Bay on Virgin Gorda, where hundreds of boats—mostly from Puerto Rico—drop anchor for a weekend-long beach party that’s become a major summer tradition. Music pulses from floating speakers and beach stages, flags flutter in the sea breeze, and the water becomes a living dance floor as revelers wade between boats and barbecues.

What started years ago as a small gathering of Puerto Rican boaters looking to celebrate Christmas in the offseason has turned into one of the BVI’s most vibrant unofficial holidays. The atmosphere is electric—part music festival, part flotilla, part backyard holiday bash. But despite the scale, the vibe remains intimate, with a strong sense of community and regional pride.

Vendors onshore join the fun with local food and crafts, and beach bars serve up rum punches, cold beers, and Christmas-themed cocktails. Many attendees decorate their boats with lights, garlands, and ornaments, giving the bay a surreal, tropical-holiday glow as the sun dips behind Virgin Gorda’s hills.

It’s not a government-run event or a tourism authority campaign—it’s organic, grassroots, and full of island soul.

That’s what makes it special. Christmas in July here isn’t about shopping or snowflakes. It’s about music, boats, and celebrating life in one of the Caribbean’s most spectacular settings.

This year’s celebration is expected to peak the weekend of July 20, with festivities beginning as early as the Thursday before. If you’re headed to Virgin Gorda that weekend, expect full anchorages, good vibes, and an unforgettable summer twist on holiday spirit.

Because in the BVI, Christmas isn’t just a season—it’s a state of mind. Even in July.
