The Bahamas Just Unveiled a Vibrant New Landmark on Cat Island
A new landmark has arrived in Cat Island.
Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis and Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper officially unveiled a new “Icon” sign this weekend, part of a ceremony celebrating the island’s unique beauty and cultural heritage.
The striking installation, designed by renowned visual artist Jamaal Rolle, is located at the Cultural Village in New Bight. The colorful sign is the latest in a series of government-led initiatives aimed at boosting domestic tourism and promoting the distinct identity of each Family Island.
It’s anchored by a tower that’s a nod to the island’s most famous landmark, The Hermitage, built by the priest named Father Jerome. You can learn more in our video feature on The Hermitage here.
The ceremony began with a prayer led by Bishop Winslow B. Moss, followed by a performance of the national anthem by the Cat Island Community Band. Phylicia Thurston Rolle served as moderator, while Chief Councilor Linda Bannister delivered welcoming remarks.
Government officials said the unveiling represents both a celebration of Cat Island’s mystique and a tangible step in expanding the island’s visibility as a cultural and tourism destination.
