Bahamas Signs Aviation Pact With Middle Tennessee State University, Expanding Training Opportunities

By: Caitlin Sullivan - June 2, 2025 - 3:21 pm

The Bahamas has signed a new agreement with Middle Tennessee State University aimed at expanding aviation education and training opportunities for Bahamian students and professionals.

The memorandum of understanding establishes a formal collaboration between MTSU’s Department of Aerospace and The Bahamas Department of Aviation.

The agreement will allow Bahamian students to enroll in MTSU’s highly regarded aerospace training programs, participate in on-campus summer immersion experiences, and pursue fast-track pathways tailored for working professionals.

Online programs are also being developed to meet the specific needs of Bahamian students and aviation workers.

“This partnership is a monumental step in developing our aviation industry and education landscape,” said Minister Cooper. “By equipping our emerging and existing aviation professionals with world-class skills and international experience, we are building a foundation for sustainable growth and competitiveness that positions The Bahamas as a global leader in aviation.”

Dr. McPhee highlighted the longstanding ties between the university and The Bahamas, noting that Bahamian students represent a significant portion of MTSU’s international enrollment. “The ties between the commonwealth and our university are strong and constant,” he said during the signing ceremony in Tennessee.

The MOU includes access to MTSU’s seven aerospace concentrations: Professional Pilot, Aerospace Management, Aerospace Maintenance, Aerospace Technology, Flight Dispatch, Unmanned Aerial Systems Operations (Drone), and Unmanned Air Systems Controls and Technology. It also connects students to MTSU’s industry partnerships with Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

The Bahamian delegation included Dr. Kenneth Romer, Director of Aviation and Deputy Director General of Tourism; Deputy Director of Aviation Mr. Milo Butler III; officials from the University of The Bahamas; and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism’s Atlanta office.

MTSU’s Department of Aerospace is one of the largest collegiate aviation programs in the United States.
