Mexico’s Most Magical City Now Has a New Marriott Hotel

By: Alexander Britell - May 28, 2025 - 1:41 pm

Ask anyone who’s been there. There’s just something magical about San Miguel de Allende, the colorful UNESCO World Heritage city that’s become a kind of pilgrimage site for travelers in search of real, authentic experiences — and a host of expats, too.

Now, San Miguel has a brand-new hotel: Clevia, the first-ever Marriott hotel in the beloved Mexican city.

The new hotel, which just opened its doors, is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection (which means you can book it on points, too).

The info on Marriott’s new San Miguel de Allende hotel

First of all, it’s not big. There are just 74 rooms (along with 42 residential-style units), set around a courtyard that includes a unique infinity pool with a kind of “mirror” water effect.

There’s an on-site eatery called Ayoli, led by top Chef Eduardo Osuna too, along with a pair of event spaces.

The rooms themselves are beautiful, with a kind of earthy opulence and wood accents.

An art focus

The hotel has a focus on art, from its colorful design to an art gallery that will include works by artists from San Miguel and, more broadly, from the rest of Mexico.

The key is in the details

If you visit the garden at the hotel, you get a special key, one that you can “personalize with a brass engraving” and then hang in one of the trees to leave for posterity. It actually comes from a legend about the city itself, one that tells of a magical key that can unlock every door in town.

“San Miguel de Allende possesses a special magic, a personality that makes it unique among Mexican towns,” says Victor Legorreta, part of the team that designed the hotel.

What we like the most

It’t not a surprise once you learn a bit more about this hotel: the courtyard and its anchor pool are stunning, the perfect place to retreat after a day of exploring the charms of this city.

Prices at the new Marriott in San Miguel de Allende

Prices at Clevia are very attractive; you can get a deluxe king room for $276 per night right now. For a room with a pool view, the rate goes up to $327 per night.

More big brands are getting in on the action in San Miguel, including the recent debut of Hyatt’s first-ever hotel in the city.
