The Dominican Republic Is Building a New “State of the Art” Cruise Port

By: Alexander Britell - March 9, 2025 - 4:29 pm

The Dominican Republic has already been seeing strong growth in the cruise industry in recent years. Now, the country is adding another new port.

The plan is for a major new cruise terminal in the Port of Barahona on the southern coast of the country, west of Santo Domingo closer to the Haitian border.

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader says it’s a “state of the art cruise port,” with the hope of fomenting tourism growth on the southern side of the country.

Tourism Minister David Collado says it’s a “demanded and necessary” project for the area.

The plan is for 35 commercial spaces, along with restaurants, bars, a replica rum distillery and even a church.

It’s part of a broader push by the government to stimulate development in Barahona that began back in 2021.

As for the cruise industry, the Dominican Republic welcomed about 2.6 million visitors last year.
