American Airlines Is Launching Flights to an Uncrowded Caribbean Island With White-Sand Beaches, Bonefishing and a New Luxury Resort

By: Alexander Britell - March 9, 2025

There are white sand beaches. There is abundant bonefishing. But the biggest thing about the island of South Caicos in Turks and Caicos is that indescribable feeling of romance, of adventure. The way you feel when you really travel far beyond the beaten path, to those harder-to-reach, remote places on the edges of the Caribbean.

Indeed, whether you’re headed to places like Ambergris Cay, North Caicos os South Caicos, you find a very different, secluded, uncrowded experience from the one you get in Providenciales.

And now it’s about to get a whole lot easier to get to the uncrowded island. Beginning March 15, American Airlines will be launching its highly-anticipated new flights between Miami and South Caicos, the island’s first-ever flights from the United States, a spokesperson for the airline confirmed to Caribbean Journal.

The new nonstop flight, which was delayed about a month from its initial start date back in February, will now put South Caicos squarely on the radar of travelers, thanks to the imminent debut of Marriott’s new Luxury Collection resort on the island, Salterra, which is now in a soft opening.

The twice-weekly ervice will be operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The island of Caicos is also home to the Sailrock resort, which has been open since 2017 and has a mix of traditional hotel rooms and luxe villas.

Notably, one of our favorite resorts in Turks and Caicos (and the whole region, to be fair), the spectacular Ambergris Cay, will also be adding connections from South Caicos. That means if you book a bungalow or villa at Ambergris Cay, you can fly to South Caicos and then board one of the resort’ss private planes for a decidedly easy 10-minute flight from South Caicos. (Ambergris Cay also runs flights from Providenciales for its guests, which take about 20 minutes). Even better? The flights are included with your room rate.

And it’s worth it — Ambergris Cay just might be the best private-island resort in the Caribbean right now, with a fantastic blend of high-level food, amenities and impressive service, all of which we loved on our recent visit to the island (don’t miss the floating bar).

So what about prices?

Demand is high, so you can book for about $1,238 per person right now in March. That’s in the Main Cabin. For business, it’s about $1,749 roundtrip for the flight, which takes about two hours.

As for Salterra, it’s now taking bookings, with rates hovering around $1,300 per night for a deluxe room.
