Delta Air Lines Is Adding a New Daily Nonstop Flight to Cancun

By: Alexander Britell - March 4, 2025

More and more major carriers have been adding Caribbean flights out of Austin’s Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Montego Bay to Cozumel to Panama.

Now, there’s another one: Delta Air Lines, which is planning to launch a new daily nonstop flight between Austin and Cancun International Airport this winter, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The airline will be kicking off seasonal service on Dec. 20, just in time for the festive season. Delta will be flying the route through the middle of April in 2026, Delta confirmed.

It’s “another popular leisure destination” for Austin, according to Paul Baldoni, the senior vice president of network planning at Delta. It’s also a sign of the city’s growing import for the region, thanks to a sizable influx of wealth and population in the post-pandemic period. In short, Austin travelers are making an impact in the region.

It’s part of a broader trend of airlines adding flights beyond the traditional air hubs for Caribbean travel like New York, Miami, Atlanta and Chicago. Now, travelers in cities like Detroit, Minneapolis and even Providence are starting to get nonstop flights to the Caribbean.

So what about prices? Delta has already put the flights on sale, but they’re not cheap. A fare on Dec. 20 starts at $1,441 roundtrip in the main cabin, and $2,090 in first class, a bit steep for a two hour and 40 minute flight. But it’s direct, after all.

Are you thinking about planning a getaway to Cancun? While the Mexican Caribbean hotspot’s star dimmed a bit in the fall (with a few months of slowing passenger traffic), it remains a regional tourism powerhouse, with an impressive stock of resorts, strong tourism infrastructure and a high service level, particularly in the luxury segment.

Cancun also has a resilient, seemingly never-ending pipeline of hotels. That includes the just-opened Palmar (which we wrote about here), which has rooms as low as $283 per night, a new Melia all-inclusive called the Casa Maya (rooms from $440) and RCD’s fresh new AVA hotel, which has rooms for $495. If you want to venture a bit beyond Cancun, we’ve stayed several times at the Grand Residences in Puerto Morelos, and it’s a truly wonderful place to stay. Rooms from $476.
