Visiting nearby Antigua, Guatemala is a must if you fly to the capital.

The rum. The architecture. The colorful streets. The pupusas.

If you haven’t been to Guatemala, you’re missing out on one of the region’s most diverse, layered destinations, from its vibrant capital to the historic thoroughfares of Antigua.

Now it’s even easier to visit the country in the western Caribbean, with new flights coming from Miami to Guatemala City this Spring.

Beginning May 10, Colombian carrier Avianca will fly daily nonstop between Miami and Guatemala, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The new route will add 2,500 weekly seats between the two cities, part of Avianca’s continued expansion out of Miami into the Caribbean Basin. (Avianca has already launched new flights from Miami to San Jose, Costa Rica, as we reported.

So what about prices?

You can still book flights in mid-May for about $378.41 roundtrip in Avianca’s “classic” fare.

The flight takes about two hours and 40 minutes.
