They Call It “The Real Mas.” Dominica’s Unique Carnival Is Back.
The food, the music, the bands, the sheer revelry. This is Mas Domnik, Dominica’s carnival, and it’s back again this week for its unrivaled celebration.
Locals call it “The Real Mas,” and it’s running this year from March 3-4, kicking off with J’ouvert, the early-morning street party that begins at 4AM, and concluding with the Grand Finale, which fills the streets with music and the famous “Last Lap.”
Revelers will be following the official carnival route, which runs throughout the historic streets of Roseau.
And yes, there are even “chill zones,” for those looking to take a break with DJ sets, photo booths, local food and even “makeup refresh” stations.
It’s a unique window into the island’s identity, a fete that blends African, European, French, and Kalinago influences as part of Dominica’s rich cultural tapestry.
