Most Sunscreen Is Harmful to Coral Reefs. This One Actually Helps Coral Grow.
It’s one of the biggest problems for coral reefs: swimmers covered in harmful, environmentally-unfriendly sunscreen that contribute to coral bleaching.
But a new sunscreen that’s on the market does the opposite: it has nutrients that actually helps coral reefs grow.
It’s called Coral Care, and it’s the first sunscreen that isn’t just safe for reefs, but “actively feeds and nourishes coral,” according to Stream2Sea, which makes it.
The company conducted what it calls extensive testing on the product at the University of Derby, which is known for its marine science department.
According to the results, Coral Care can help boost healthy coral growth by as much as 21 percent with its combination of nutrients and minerals.
And yes, it’s also SPF 30, with protection against UVA and UVB.
Count us as fans — and hopefully it catches on in the marketplace.
