Cancun Passenger Traffic Keeps Declining. Is Demand for the Mexican Caribbean Softening?
When Cancun’s air passenger traffic decline began in the late summer, there were several theories. Perhaps it was the summer storms. Or maybe it was Tulum airport siphoning travelers away. But now Cancun’s traffic slump is, well, continuing.
The airport saw a 7.2 percent decline in passenger traffic in December, compared to the same month in 2023, including a 6.3 percent reduction in international traffic.
For the year, Cancun’s airport saw passenger traffic of 20.175 million — a 3.5 percent decline compared to 2023.
It’s enough to be cause for concern, particularly as competing destinations in the Caribbean saw extremely strong finishes to the year.
Is it crime? It is a lack of promotion by Mexico’s network of tourist boards? Or is demand for the Mexican Caribbean starting to slow down?
The next few months should tell us a lot.
