Passenger Traffic Surges in Puerto Rico, In Strong Sign for Caribbean Travel Demand
After a slight decline in the fall, Puerto Rico’s main air hub made a big statement in November, according to the newest data from ASUR, which manages Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.
Traffic in the capital was up 8.7 percent year over year, with total passenger traffic of 1.039 million, according to the data.
For 2024, San Juan’s airport is now up 7.8 percent, with total passenger traffic just under 12 million.
It was a major lift for the airport and a strong sign of where the travel demand stands for the Caribbean right now.
In comparison, Mexican Caribbean hotspot Cancun continued to cool down in November, with a traffic decline of 9.5 percent — part of a prolonged trend in the second half of this year. (ASUR also manages that airport.).
As one of the Caribbean’s most-visited destinations, an increase in the beginning of the shoulder season in Puerto Rico is a healthy indicator for the region at large.
