Miami Flights, Luxury Resorts Help Drive a Tourism Rebirth in Dominica
The waterfalls. The hiking trail. The boiling lake. It’s the Caribbean’s true “Nature Island,” and the Eastern Caribbean destination of Dominica has always been a popular spot for adventure seekers.
But in recent years, that traveler profile has been changing. Much of it began with the debut about a decade ago of Secret Bay, the island’s first luxury resort; and it expanded with the opening of what is now the InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort and Spa.
And it reached a true watershed with the arrival of American Airlines’ first-ever Miami-Dominica flight at the end of 2021.
Now, after a few years of flat growth, the island is thriving, with 19 percent growth in tourism arrivals so far, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The data was revealed during the recent Caribbean Tourism Organization annual conference in Grand Cayman.
Officials also revealed that the island, which is currently in the early stages of building a new international airport, is also looking to cultivate direct flights service from New York.
It’s all positive for an island that is starting to find a new place on the radar of travelers.
