We’ve visited more beaches (and islands) in The Bahamas than any other team of journalists on the planet. In other words, we know The Bahamas, and we know just how diverse a destination it is. Of course you’ve heard of the 700 islands and cays, but it’s very likely that you’ve never heard of many of these beaches — the sorts of beaches you imagine on cold winter afternoons. We’ve put together a guide to our 15 favorite “unknown” beaches in the country, spread out all over The Bahamas, from Abaco to San Salvador. What you’ll find is a mix of pocked-sized beaches and endless, sweeping ones, some with hotels on them and others far, far away from pretty much everything.

Cape Santa Maria, Long Island, The Bahamas This is the one you want. The one you think about, the one you conjure up in your perfect Caribbean beach fantasy. You can travel all over the Caribbean (and we do) and not find a better beach than this one: it’s a perfect crescent shape, with palm trees and pine trees and Windex-blue water that has an otherworldly quality, with sand so white you have to squint to look at it during the day. (It’s also the setting for a classic, throwback beach resort that shares the beach’s name).
