In Grenada, a Different Kind of Dive Festival
It’s the beauty of the Caribbean undersea world that has divers the world over descending on the region to explore it. And one island’s major dive festival is all about protecting that beauty.
This is the Dive Conservation Fest, a unique kind of Caribbean dive event that puts conservation at the forefront, with this year’s event on the island of Grenada set for Sept. 30-Oct. 5.
The island-wide event puts the focus on local conservation activities on the island, with a number of educational sessions aimed at crafting best practices — along with deepening engagement between the public and private sector.
It’s the third annual edition of the event in its current form. The festival began life in 2018 as the Grenada Dive Festival; in 2022, the event took a new shape with its focus on conservation.
It’s all about sustainability, Grenada Tourism Authority CEO told Caribbean Journal. The destination has been putting sustainability on the front-burner for the last few years, putting the spotlight on the island’s broad agro-tourism efforts, strong connection between local suppliers and resorts and growing emphasis on local community tourism.
The festival incorporates everything from diving and chocolate pairings to coral reef restoration and lion fish hunting.
